The transport was late. On the departure board, in little red letters, the word DELAYED flashed resolutely next to the 7:15 to Naboo. He stared at it; willing it to change. It didn't.

With a resigned sigh, A'den made his way into the cafe, bought a large caf and a pair of sweet rolls from a bored-looking human teenager, and took a seat near the windows. From there he could at least watch other transports arriving and departing. In the distance beyond the sprawling spaceport, he could make out the city of Daou, purple glass towers reflecting the setting sun. Beyond that was a river, and even further out, tiny lumps of gray duracrete that were massive industrial complexes.

For all their behavior issues, the Nulls were usually extremely patient. A'den, like the young businessman whose disguise he wore, just wanted to get off this particular rock. He checked his watch - yep, now he was going to be late to meet his brother - and watched as the seconds counted down towards zero.

Suddenly the little girl in the booth behind him exclaimed, "Look, mommy! Fireworks!" She slapped the flat of her hand excitedly on the window, nearly elbowing him in the head. As they watched, brilliant sparks in every color of the rainbow shot into the air far beyond the city.

"Ooh, fireworks," replied the mother, putting down her holozine to watch. "Pretty."

A'den watched the pyrotechnics, gazing rapt out the windows with everyone else in the cafe. It was a pretty neat display, and if they wanted to call them fireworks, that was fine by him.

Someone tried to escape once. They failed, of course. They always failed.

Sirius shuffled down the corridor, alone with his own miserable thoughts, when a thin, high-pitched siren began to wail. One moment he was in the center of the corridor, the guards giving him a bit of space; the next, those hideous, black-cloaked dementors swooped down on him and pinned him to the wall with terrifying speed and ferocity. Crouching on hands and knees, hands clasped over his head, he cowered in silent horror at the thought that he'd somehow provoked them into sucking out his soul.

Only then did he hear the siren. They were hunting someone else.

The dementors hovered protectively above him, their black robes blocking everything from sight as they pressed him closer to the wall. He didn't move. Ever sense suddenly sharp as he listened. Running feet echoed from a corridor somewhere nearby. A shout. The rustle of fabric and scuffling feet. A scream. Silence. It was over.

The momentary excitement was over. His guards slowly fanned out again, the closest gesturing for him to get to his feet with a rotten, skeletal hand. Warily, he obeyed. They hovered closer than they had before, the thrill of the hunt and disappointment at having missed out heightening their predatory desires. Head down, his heart still racing in terror, he continued his monotonous shuffle back to his cell.

“Okay, go ahead and put the milk in.”

“Like this?”

“Well, we were hoping most of it would make it into the bowl, but we can adjust.”

The six year old nodded, examining the bowl of brownie mix and the counter full of milk, as if trying to gauge how much had missed. The boys were enjoying an afternoon to themselves, and Terry was enjoying a day with Zach, Alice, and Jackie. Lunch had been… interesting. She didn’t have the practice the boys had when dealing with three kids at once, so it was a mess of spit up and spilled food, and maybe just a bit of tears on Terry’s part. But Zach had been so helpful, feeding his sisters, wiping their chins, and Terry offered to make brownies with him while the girls napped.

The brownie-making had lasted considerably longer than the nap, so now the twins were playing in their playpen, perfectly in Terry’s sight line, and she kept glancing over to check on them so many times that Zach had to grab her arm and pull her attention back to him. He was so his father’s son. Always had to be the center of attention.

My buddy Morgan likes fireworks. In fact, he'll go to Chinatown and find a guy selling them. And when he finds that guy and starts talking to him, it's almost like Morgan is trying to buy drugs or something. I mean, that's how it looks. He's really careful, looking around, making sure he's not being followed and stuff. And then he'll buy them.

Does Morgan really know what he's doing? Um...not really. Somehow though, he's managed to set them off without getting hurt though. (Thankfully.)

[Locked to those who know of his secret life]

One time Morgan bought fireworks and it was a good thing that he did. You see, there were a bunch of bad guys in a Chinese mob that we were after and things weren't looking so good for our little team. So, I set off a bunch of fireworks as a distraction. The mobsters ran out to see what was going on and I slipped in the restaurant and set Casey and Sarah free.

Sure, I was supposed to stay out of sight, but it probably was a good thing I took that risk.

The only bad thing? While I was doing that, Ellie was waiting at home for us to have our Mother’s Day dinner. It’s not on the traditional Mother’s Day. It’s in October and we celebrate the day that we learned to rely on one another after our Mom took off. I of course had to make up a lame excuse about why I wasn’t there.

Despite all that, I guess I can be grateful things sorta ended up working out in the end. Sarah and Casey caught the bad guys after fighting ‘em off once they were free. An upset Ellie finally forgave me and we did end up having our Mother’s Day dinner, just one night later. [/unlocked]

Trick Or Treat. Nov. 6th, 2009 @ 01:07 am

It was Halloween, and as soon as Bart had heard Chloe would be hanging out at Oliver's apartment and helping to give out candy, he decided that he had to be there, too. To make sure that wasn't anything funny or in the way of hanky panky going on, of course.

For the majority of the evening, Bart behaved himself. He kept quiet, except for the occasional pick-up line he'd toss at his favorite blonde bombshell, and just sit nearby, watching the two, as if he were their chaperon.

Everything was going just fine until Ollie snuck that oh-so-sly arm around Chloe's shoulders. And that's when Bart started thinking of evil things to do to his not-so-nice compadre.

He was on the verge of exploding with anger when he heard the taller, older man tell their female friend that he was about to go for a shower, and asked if she could handle the few trick-or-treaters on her own.

(Before she could even respond, the wheels in Bart's head were turning.)

I am a man of God, and sincere in my beliefs. Our Heavenly Father, His Son Jesus Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary are everything to me. I live my life in accordance with the rules of Opus Dei and the Catholic Church, practicing prayer, corporal mortification and service. Christianity is not just my faith, it is my passion, more precious to me than the very breath of life in my body.

But sometimes – and perhaps this is a little sinful of me – sometimes there are fellow Christians who anger and frustrate me.

Bishop Aringarosa mentioned a preacher from another church who actually had the gall to denounce children’s trick or treating on Halloween as sinful, cultish and reminiscent of black magic!

What nonsense! All Hallows Eve is not just a holiday, but a holy day. And the little ones out on their candy-collecting excursions – it’s just innocent fun. Children need to have their fun! I never had much of it when I was a little boy, so I am in favor of anything that makes children happy.

Even a believer as intense as I am sometimes needs to say, to put it in American slang terms, “lighten up”.

Jason never went trick or treating as a child.

Shunned and bullied by the other children for his difference, he didn’t have little friends to go with. Mommy could have taken him, but she seemed to have wanted to spare his feelings in case anyone treated him rudely or roughly.

Mommy was the only person who loved Jason, you see. She wanted to protect him from anyone who might act abusively towards him. So Jason never got to wear a costume or a mask and go out to ask his neighbours for delicious Halloween candy.

But Mommy always decorated the house for Halloween. Pictures of black cats and ghosts adorned the walls, and Mommy helped Jason to carve pumpkins. There was candy at home on Halloween, of course, and lots of it. Jason would be curled up underneath the covers of his little bed, and Mommy would read him delightfully shivery ghost stories that didn’t scare Jason at all. Jason already knew that there were more frightening things in the world than ghosts.

It wasn’t till many years later that Jason would go out wearing a mask. But by then it was not trick or treating – the terror was real.

"Trick or treat!"

Maggie smiled as Inga walked through the doors to the ER, one hand holding onto her walker and the other clutching her pumpkin bucket for all she was worth. The five year-old was dressed as one of the Disney Fairies - Maggie didn't know which one; her mother had been the one to pick out the costume.

Frank peered at the little girl over the top of the desk. "Can I help you?" he asked dryly.

Inga beamed up at him. "Trick or treat!" she called again, holding out her bucket.

"Well, what a pretty little fairy!" Haleh gushed as she came around the desk, sweeping the basket of candy off of the top from under Frank's nose. She picked two mini-candy bars from the top of the pile and went to put them into Inga's bucket. "Here you go, sweetie."

"Uh- ix-nay on the peanuts," Maggie cautioned as she held up a hand to stop Haleh. "We just found out she's allergic." With an understanding nod Haleh swapped the offending chocolate bar for another piece of candy, a bag of plain M&Ms. "What do you say?" prompted Maggie as Haleh put the candy in Inga's bucket.

"Thank you!" the little girl chirped.

"You're welcome, Sunshine."

"C'mon, kiddo." Maggie put a hand on her daughter's back and guided her toward the elevator. "Let's get you up to daycare before they leave without you."
